20/20 Vision

So Bubba accompanied us to Pumpkins check up this week since he needed a physical for baseball.  He is now 6'1" and 154 lbs.  Everything was great.  His vision is 20/20 and the Dr. says he's still got a few years of growing to do.

You may remember this post about Bubba starting a new school this year and how his confidence level was so low.  Ok, if you haven't read the post, I am being very sarcastic.  This child does not lack in confidence.  He is comfortable in his own skin and adapts well.  He is very quick to tell you he loves school.  So was I surprised when he came home recently and said he had been chosen as the 8th grade attendant on the homecoming court?  Well, yes and no.

His personality is bigger than life and he's just one of those people everyone loves.  He's always joking and making people smile.  So, no, it didn't surprise me.  However, I mean, he's only been in the school 5 months.  He goes to a small private school and some of these kids have been together since K-3.  So I questioned him as to how the election process was held.  Did each homeroom elect a candidate and then the entire grade vote?  That's how I remember it when we were in high school.  But that wasn't it.  Because the size of the classes, they put a ballot out listing everyone.  They each voted for one boy and one girl.  And he was chosen.

I had to laugh.  Really?  You've only know some of these people for 5 months and you got elected?  But that's how Bubba rolls.

So this past week was Homecoming.  Each day had a different theme.  Friday was superhero day, so he asked us to make him a custom shirt, and of course we did.

I tried to convince him to wear some tights under the shorts, but he wouldn't.  We actually bought some to try but they were really too short and he said they were "itchy".

Friday night was the homecoming games (basketball). I almost cried as he was getting ready.  He was excited to be getting dressed up. ( I never thought I'd see the day!) He came straight home from baseball practice and got busy getting ready.  He was so handsome.  I just kept thinking how this is not possible.  How did he get this grown up?

We dropped him off for the games and came back for the last half of the varsity boys game. ( And that was almost too much for Pumpkin.  She wants to get down and run.) But I really did enjoy being there and watching him have a great time.  When we arrived he was in the student section cheering his heart out. That brought joy to this mama's heart.  Why? I'm really not sure.  Maybe it's just that I caught a glimpse into a part of his life that I don't get to see on a daily basis. Whatever the reason, it filled my heart.  I only wish I could have gotten to an angle to take pictures of them up there. The gym was extremely crowded.  The homecoming court was presented after the games, so without further ado, here they are - ECS 8th grade attendants.

Some parents put together a Homecoming Social/Dance after the game at a local venue.  True to fashion, Bubba didn't mention this until 8:30 pm the night before.  He expressed that he would like to go, but would need a date.  "Um, seriously dude?  It's 24 hours away?! Who would you ask? " He quickly answered (meaning he had already contemplated the situation).  We knew the girl's family from high school, which totally freaked him out, LOL.  "Well, you might need to ask her, I mean it is tomorrow night", I explained.  "Oh yeah, good point, Mom." So a few texts later, (yes he asked her by TEXT! Kids these days!) he had a date.

Did I just really say that? My 14 year old had a date?  Sounds horrible, but I don't have a leg to stand on.  I'm married to the guy I fell in love with at 13.  Bubba recently found us out. I swore I would never tell my children the full story.  But he's a pretty intelligent kid.  He saw his dad's senior portrait and I told him that was what his dad looked like when I met him.  After just a second, he said "WAIT just a minute! That would mean you were 13!!!"  Oops! Who taught that kid to count, anyway?  Seriously though, we've talked to him about dating and marriage a lot.  We remind him frequently to choose friends and relationships wisely;  they can affect the rest of your life. Oh, but I digress.

Anyway, we drove him to the dance to meet up with his date.  And why yes, I did follow them in and take pictures. When we picked him up a couple hours later, he said he'd had a good time.  Nothing fantastic, not terrible either.  Just pretty good.

And this just confirms that the doctor was right, there is nothing wrong with this boy's eyes!

I love you Bubba! I am honored to be your Mom. I don't know if I can adequately express how some parents  dread the teen years, and rightfully so.  However, you are a complete joy. Yes, I know we have our moments, but we are human.  I enjoy spending time with you.  You are a blessing to both me and Dad. You are the best big brother ever. Your spiritual growth and maturity astound me some days.  Keep seeking after Him in all you do!
