My Funny Valentine

I debated about this post for a while, well at least 60 seconds or so, as to ponder whether this would embarrass or dishonor my true love.  But after much thought  a brief contemplation, I decided I had to share this.  Its just funny - Sorry J!  After all, I blog to capture memories and I don't want to forget this one!

The Scene:  At home- night of Feb 13th.  J & Bubba head to Wally World to find a little gift for Bubba to give a young lady.  ( Another story within itself -maybe another post.)  Upon arriving home, I am talking to Bubba about his purchase and turn around to find J grinning from ear to ear.  He is elated and then I look right past him onto the breakfast table and I see it.  A dozen roses tightly squeezed in a tall clear vase and right in front of it... are you ready?  A sock monkey!   Well here is where it becomes obvious that I am no good at lying or faking a response.  My reaction? Well mama always said I should tell the truth, so I did.

Me: "A Sock Monkey? Really Baby?! You got me a sock monkey?"

J: Yes!!! Didn't you want a sock monkey?!

Me: No. Not really.

J: But I thought you said you wanted a sock monkey.

Me: No, never.

J : Are you sure you didn't say that around Christmas?

Me: No, honey, I never said that.  I love you immensely but sometimes you don't handle the gift giving too well.  Sorry, but I don't want a sock monkey.

J: Oh, Sorry.

He left the room, deflated I am sure.  Ok, I will admit, I probably handled it all wrong, but for those who know me,  you can pretty well read my face and know what I am thinking.  Five minutes or so passes and he comes back.

J: I remember what it was you wanted.... you wanted an ELF!

Me: (Doubled over laughing)Yes, I do.  I want an ELF on the Shelf when Pumpkin is a little bigger. How did you ever get sock monkey out of elf? ( Still laughing profusely)

J: Valentines is NOT OVER! I will get you an ELF!

Me:  (Still giggling) Baby that's gonna be hard cause I think you would have to special order it at this time of year.  But thanks anyway!

I hope you don't misunderstand this as me being ungrateful.  I love this man with every fiber of my being.  I would have been happy with no gift whatsoever. However, I am grateful that I have been blessed with a wonderful husband.  J, you may not be very good at gift giving, but you are so much more.  You go above and beyond in so many ways.  You do so much for me that a lot of men wouldn't do.  How do I know? Because their wives tell me.  You are always willing to help me with the laundry and other household chores. You encourage me in my hobbies and often come along beside me and learn with me. You come to my rescue quite frequently. Just recently you finished baking my dish for the Women's Ministry Breakfast so I could go ahead and set up.  Then you delivered to me at church and then ran to the store to buy diapers and such that I forgot to pick up for our mission project that day and proceeded to deliver those as well.  And that is just one example of many. You are my very best friend and I can't imagine doing life without you!

On a lighter note: Valentines afternoon, I had to stop by the Church office.  Our associate pastor asked what J had gotten me for Valentines, so I told him the whole story.  "Well," he said "If my wife doesn't like her gift, I can just tell her at least you didn't get a Sock Monkey!"
